ANZAC Day Street Party

ANZAC Day Street Party

Every ANZAC Day we stop and remember the brave young Australians that served in our honour all those years ago.

ANZAC Day Street Party After the dawn services we go on to celebrate and enjoy the country and the culture that they defended with their lives at BBQ’s, parties and social celebrations around the country.

What better way to celebrate and give thanks then to enjoy those cultural things we love the most that they fought so hard to protect… So lets dance!

For over 40 years now the Union Hotel has hosted the ANZAC Day Street Party.

It starts inside the hotel in every room and then spills out onto the street infront. It has now grown to take up the whole of Waymouth St between Young St and Bentham St and includes marquees, food stalls and outdoor bars.

This is the dance area just as the band are starting to tune up. It’s empty now but this was very much the calm before the storm!

There is live music throughout the day from full ‘big bands’, marching bands, military style Pipe Bands and of course cover bands later on in the night.

Salt and Pepper Swing Band played from 12pm until 2:15pm. They were certainly the main attraction for the QuickSteps group and the other Swing Dance clubs from around Adelaide.

They played swing hits from the 1920-40’s that had us up and grooving from the first song!

Every year the Vintage Style Facebook Club gets together and dresses the part. They then take to the floor dancing swing styles such as Lindy Hop, Balboa and Charleston. It’s really something to see!

Don’t they look fantastic…

Most of the songs were suitable for dancing triple swing and rock n roll but we managed to get creative and sneak in a few other styles like foxtrot, rumba and quickstep for variety. If you’d like to know more about the different styles we teach click here.

It’s always important to rest between dances and enjoy a drink, some sunshine and a chat with dance friends. Here’s Emma and Carina doing just that! 🙂

ANZAC Day Street PartyWe were literally dancing in the street and on the bituman! This is a ‘street party’ after all…   Most of us wore normal street style shoes which made the dancing a little easier. Dance Shoes certainly would have come out of this event a little worse for wear…

The QuickSteps crew had a wonderful time at this event and will certainly be heading to the next one! It seems like it will be one of our yearly traditions and another wonderful opportunity to dance in Adelaide.
