Learn Swing Dance

Start with rock 'n roll. Just as you learn to walk before you run, it is best to learn to rock 'n roll before you swing. They are actually the same dance just with different timing and varying degrees of footwork.

What is Swing Dancing?

What is Swing Dancing?
‘Swing’ dance actually forms an umbrella featuring multiple dance styles. Swing includes rock ‘n roll, East Coast Swing, West Coast Swing, Hustle, Boogie Woogie, Lindy hop, Balboa… and more. What do they all have in common? The music is fun and upbeat with lots of spins and turns. For the dance nerds out there: They also use the same footwork known as ‘ball flat’.

At QuickSteps we teach East Coast Swing in both a triple (swing) and single (rock ‘n roll) tempo.

Why Should I Learn to Swing?

1

Health and Fitness

Dance is an excellent fitness option. People tend to stick with dancing more so than the gym because it is social, musical and very engaging. We call it ‘exercise in disguise’. Swing is high energy making for an excellent cardio workout! The fact that swing is designed for you to bounce and bop around does wonder for your legs too! Don’t believe us? Record your steps during a swing class – you’ll hit your 10,000 daily steps with no problem.

Dance at Parties and Live Music Gigs

You can dance swing to a huge range of popular music and the fact it doesn’t take that much room means that you’ll be able to use it at a range of places around Adelaide. QuickSteps’ members go out to pubs and live music events around Adelaide all the time. Here are some of our more recent adventure:

  • Adelaide Casino with Lucky Seven
  • Avoca Hotel
  • Kit Kat Swing Club

What music suits swing?

When many people think of swing they often to think of 1940’s, big band type sounds. Whilst this is certainly fabulous for swing dancing, suitable music is much more broad than that. Here’s just a handful: Fly Me To The Moon by Frank Sinatra, The Way You Do The Things You do by the Temptations, Build Me Up Buttercup by The Foundations, Black & Gold by Sam Sparrow, Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Jepsen, SOS by Rhianna, Youngblood by 5 Seconds Of Summer.

Where Do I start?

Our members often start with a complimentary private lesson. You can choose a time that suits you – during the day, evening, or weekend. We emphasise the importance of private lessons at QuickSteps because you can learn in 1 private what you learn in 5 group classes. We love group classes too – we have more than 50 per week, by far the most in Adelaide. Your teacher will show you where to start.
