What is West Coast Swing?

As the name suggests, West Coast is a part of the beautiful ‘swing’ family along with styles such as rock n roll, jive, East Coast Swing and Lindy Hop (just to name a few!).

Though West Coast Swing has roots in Lindy Hop it has developed a long way from those roots and is now it’s own dance with it’s own individual flavour.

It is a ‘slot dance’ meaning that the shapes and patterns of the dance are performed in an imaginary rectangle that encompasses the dance partnership with both dancers flowing smoothly from one end of the rectangle to the other.

What Music Can I Dance West Coast Swing To?

Being a ‘swing’ dance, West Coast was originally danced to music with a ‘swing’ beat. As time has gone on it has become completely acceptable to dance West Coast Swing to songs without a swing beat at all. In fact, it has a very wide range of music that is compatible. From pop to blues to house and country, if it has a consistent beat, you can dance to it!

Here are some examples of West Coast Swing songs we love!

Can Beginners Learn West Coast Swing?

Absolutely! You can learn West Coast as a beginner that has never danced before.

We’d put the West Coast Swing ‘difficulty’ at a 4/10. If you want to learn some easier styles to start with we recommend rock n roll and rumba as an introduction into the West Coast Swing.

West Coast Swing Dance Classes at QuickSteps

We are currently running West Coast Swing 2 days a week due to the styles popularity.

On Saturdays we have Level 1 at 10:30am, Concepts Class at 11:15am, Level 2 at 12pm. We then follow this on Monday nights with Level 1 at 7pm, Concepts Class at 7:45pm, Level 2 at 8:30pm. We then wrap up the Monday night classes with a mini social dance 9:15pm-10pm where you are all invited to practise your West Coast and work on what you have been learning! Practice makes perfect!

We also teach West Coast in private lessons at Quicksteps so this can be a really good way to start. You get to dance with your own teacher and have them teach at YOUR pace!

In a couple? Great! The two of you get your own teacher to help you work on your patterns, lead and follow and connections while you dance.
