Basic

Basic

There are 2 stages to the salsa basic.

Stage 1: Start with your feet shoulder width apart on a straight line. It can help to practise this basic step on tiles or wooden floor boards and actually use the demarcation on the floor as a guide. Use this line as your ‘starting point’.

When you rock forward (for the leads) or backward (for the followers) make sure you are alway replacing your feet back on to your ‘starting point’ line. This will create a diamond shape on the floor.

Stage 2: Once you become comfortable with your salsa basic step it will gradually become less structured. Rather than always landing on your ‘starting point’ your feet will naturally pass each other between the forward rock and back rock. This will give your salsa a softer more flowing look and feel.

This generally happens when dancers move from a beginner level of dance to an intermediate level of salsa dancing.
